The Gowanus Expressway (I-278) is a critical part of New York City's highway system. This interstate traverses the borough of Brooklyn, connecting the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge to the Brooklyn-Battery Tunnel, a distance of approximately 5.7 miles.
The lower portion of the Gowanus Expressway, from the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge to Sixth Avenue, is located below grade and not immediately visible to the surrounding neighborhood. The remainder consists of a 3.8-mile-long viaduct ("elevated highway") above 65th Street, Third Avenue, and Hamilton Avenue. It connects with the Brooklyn-Battery Tunnel and continues to the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway. The Gowanus Expressway connects to two other major roadways: the Shore Parkway (part of the Belt Parkway) and the Prospect Expressway. |
